Melanie C was born Melanie Jayne Chisholm in Liverpool on 12th January 1974. For the past five years she has been Sporty Spice one of the Spice Girls who in their short career have sold over 40 million records. General consensus has always suggested that Melanie C was the biggest singer of the bunch but she never quite shone to her own potential.
When the Spice Girls finally took some time off Melanie C took advantage of the situation and decamped to Los Angeles to begin recording her debut solo album. Contributors to the album have included Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers producer Rick Rubin, Madonna collaborators Marius De Vries and Rock Nowels, William Orbit (Madonna, Blur) two members of Beck's band and, of course, Bryan Adams. One track from the album, Never Be The Same Again includes guest vocals from Lisa Left Eye from TLC.
About her influences Melanie says, "Well, I've always been into indie and rock. That's always the direction I wanted to go in". She's a huge fan of Madonna, Hole and Garbage. She loves The Cardigan's crystalline pop and admires Oasis and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. While in LA she saw Blur in concert and came away in awe.
In addition to her solo work Melanie C went back in to the studio with the Spice Girls in August to begin recording their third album. They will undertake more live shows at the end of the year and during the Autumn Melanie embarked on her own From Liverpool to Leicester Square tour which has actually taken her to America, Australia, Japan and Europe.
